Does
Fat make you Fat?
First
of all does Fat make you fat? It is only logical and common-sense
to assume that the consumption of fat increases your weight. Surely
nobody doubts this.
Do I
look Fat in this Fat?
We
even say sometimes, albeit cruelly, that an overweight person
is fat. Do I look fat in this? Fat and weight are interlinked
and one in the same, end of story, now tell me something I don't
know.
Fat Should
Make You Fat - But it doesn't.
By all rights fat should make you fat, or fatter, but it doesn't.
Sometimes common-sense lies to us and logic isn't enough. Fat
does not, of itself, make you Fat. Life is not that simple and
neither is fat.
Twice
the Calories but do you fill full yet?
Fat
in food can actually help you to fill full and eat less. Whilst
fat contains more than twice the calories per gram than carbohydrate,
fat keeps away hunger for about three times as long.
Carbs
Make You Hungry
If
you replace fat with carbohydrate you end up eating as least as
much but your taste buds are thinking of going on vacation and
you are not getting the fat-burning effects of fat.
Low Fat and Fat Free
"Low-fat"
or "fat-free." do not guarantee that you will lose weight.
If you eat too much you will probably put on weight. If you consume
more calories than you burn you will put on weight.
So Just
Stop Eating?
Reducing
calories does not guarantee you will reduced your body fat. Your
metabolism increases or decreases to match the number of calories
you consume.
I'm starving
- slow down!
Your
body has evolved to realize that when there's not much food coming
in it needs to burn less calories. You might need them later so
it conserves energy.
Is all
Fat Bad?
Things
get even more complicated. Not all fat is bad. In fact fat can
be an important part of a healthy diet. Fat can be good for you.
But of course it can also be very bad. As in other facets of life,
we need to distinguish between the good, the bad and the evil.
Fat is good??
Whilst a
high-fat diet is not a good idea some fats are good for you and
can help you to reduce your weight.
Animal vs Plants
Plants have
lived on this planet for far longer than animals and have you
ever seen an overweight carrot? Plant fats, with the exception
of coconut and palm oil, are the goodies. Animal Fat (unless its
mean, lean, slippery and clean) are the baddies.
Good Fat is truly
Heart Smart
Good fat
is unsaturated fat. Unsaturated fats are found in plant foods
and fish. These may be good for you as they are good for the health
of your heart.
Non-Animal and Fat
Fish
Good fats
are contained in natural non-animal products. The best of the
unsaturated fats are found in olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil,
albacore tuna, and salmon.
