Good
Fat can reduce your Weight
Good fat
can can help your metabolism you can actually help your body to
burn calories and reduce your weight.
Unsaturated Fats Lower
Cholesterol
Unsaturated
good fats can lower cholesterol, increase your metabolism and
promote good health. This means that the bad fats that you eat
can be offset by the good fats that you eat. This could be called
a balanced fat diet.
The Good Fats Omega
3 and Omega 6
Omega 3 and
omega 6 fatty acids aid brain function, body repair and regeneration,
as well as skin elasticity. Salmon, oily fish and flaxseed oil,
avocado, nuts and olives are all good sources of omega 3 and omega
6.
Omegas in Margarine
You can even
buy Omegas in Margarine. How effect they are is open to debate,
as, believe it or not, how you consume something effects how it
is absorbed or otherwise dealt with by your body. You can kinda
see why some people say just eat natural food and you'll be alright.
What's Natural Food?
That's for
another time..
Bad Fat
Bad fat is
saturated fat. Boo! :) These fats are found in meat, butter, cheese
and non-skim milk. Eating too much saturated fat may raise your
cholesterol thereby increasing your risk of heart disease.
Meat and Diary
Bad Fat includes
unlean beef, chicken, pork, lamb, cream, butter and dairy products
with milk fat. Low fat dairy is completely fine and healthy.
Palm Oil and Coconuts
Palm oil
and coconuts contain high levels of saturated fat. Watch out for
Palm Oil's alias "Palmolein".
Evil Fat
Trans Fats
are seriously Bad (Boo Booooo :) Margarine, snack foods, baked
goods, and fried foods are all common sources of seriously Bad
Fat.
Trans Fats
Trans Fats
alias' include "hydrogenated". Trans Fats can be hard
to spot as any like any product that gets a bad name its easier
to call it something else rather than change it.
Say No to Trans Fats
Thankfully
Trans Fats are being banned by the powers-that-be regardless of
what they are called. For some, Tans Fats are as big a health
risk as smoking when it comes to heart disease.
Processed Food = Junk
Food?
We have all
been told that Junk Food for is bad for us. Processed Foods can
also be pretty junky and best avoided. Some common ones to watch
out for are canned food, processed meats, TV dinners and snack
foods.
Why do Supermarkets
sell so much Junk?
Yes I know
that processed foods takes up a lot of the supermarkets shelve
space but they have to make a dollar somewhere :)
Read the Label, Ignore
the Slogans
Look at the
label of 'contains'. The longer the list of things that don't
sound like food the more junky it is.
Heart Smart Tick -
Could Do Better
Sadly Heart
Smart isn't as smart as you might think. The health tick is applied
to a number of items on the supermarket shelves that have become
less bad for you. It does not mean that there aren't better alternatives
that don't have the tick.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
It certainly
doesn't mean that fresh fruit and vegetables aren't significantly
better for you than a ticked item. Don't be conned, even if its
ticked check the label for a telltale long list of ingredients.
Chew the
Fat and be happy
So it appears
you can have you fat and eat it. Just make sure its the Good Fat
and not too much of the Bad.
